Urban and Environmental Science Department
　

The Urban and Environmental Science Department has developed from the Geography Department, which was founded in 1989. During its development of more than 10 years, the Department has become increasingly powerful and prosperous. At present, the Department has three undergraduate disciplines, which are Geographical Science, Geographical Information System, Resource Environment and Town and Country Planning Management. It also has four teaching and research sections and four laboratories. Currently, approximately 450 students are studying at the Department, excluding part-time students.
　

The Department employs a team of highly qualified teachers. At present, the Department has 23 faculty and staff members, 7 of whom are professors or associate professors, and 6 people have been conferred a Doctorate or Master’s degree, or are engaging in the study of Doctorate or Master’s degree programs. Meanwhile, many well-known professors and experts from other famous universities and institutes have been invited to work as part-time professors.

This Department pays great attention to scientific research. Since 2002, the Department has had more than 10 scientific research projects, including one project aided by the National Natural Science Fund, 4 projects aided by the Natural Science Fund of Henan Province. The staff members have also composed 5 professional books and textbooks, and published over 100 academic papers.
　

At present, the Department has four laboratories, namely the Model Exhibition Room, the Remote Sensing Laboratory and the Environmental Analysis Laboratory, with a number of advanced instruments and equipment including figure workstation, engineering scanner, high-efficiency liquid phase chromatograph, this equipment has a value of over 2 million Yuan. The Department also has its own independent computer laboratories, multimedia classrooms, and a library with 60,000 volumes of books and more than 60 kinds of domestic and foreign periodicals.
　

Since the Department puts such great emphasis on improving its teaching quality, the employment situation of the graduates is very good, and 22% of the students are admitted to engage in the study of a Master’s degree in other universities upon graduation from the Department. The Department has set up bases for practical teaching in Songshan Mountain, Lushan Mountain, the Weather Forecasting Bureau of Xinyang City, the Hydrometric Station of Xinyang City, Nanwan Forest Farm and other places. Moreover, in order to strengthen external exchange and cooperation, the Department often holds academic activities with key universities in Zhengzhou, Wuhan and other places.
