 ¡¡ Foreign Languages Department The Foreign Languages Department of Xinyang Normal University was established in 1983. The Department has been orientated to the education to develop highly qualified talents who are capable of language teaching and research, so that the graduates can meet the demand of national economic development and economic globalization. While giving full attention to its traditional advantages in the training of language skills and in the teaching of English literature, the Foreign Languages Department is also devoting itself to develop the teaching and research of linguistics and cultural studies. The Department has been authorized to enroll Master¡¯s degree candidates in one discipline, that is, English Language and Literature. Currently, approximately 1,500 full time-students and postgraduates are studying at the Department. At present, the Department has 45 faculty and staff members, two of whom are professors, 6 are associate professors and 21 are lecturers. The staff members are very active in scientific research, and have undertaken many scientific research projects, including two projects aided by the National Social Sciences Fund. Moreover, they have published hundreds of academic papers and composed dozens of textbooks and professional books. The Department has a key provincial level discipline: English Linguistics. Professor Liu Chendan is in charge of the research affairs in this discipline. The subordinate research fields include Linguistics, British and American Literature, and Translation. The following courses have been established to improve the language application skills: Comprehensive English, English Reading, English Pronunciation, English Listening, English Writing, Oral English, Linguistics, Lexicology, Literature, the Survey of Britain and America, Journalistic English, History and Appreciation of British and American Literature, Translation Theory and Practice, the English Teaching Methods, French, Japanese, etc. The Foreign Languages Department is equipped with up-to-date teaching facilities, which include 2 computer labs, 4 language labs, one radio station for language teaching, and 2 libraries that are abundant in English books and magazines of professional fields.
